Tv series has created moments in time for me and my emotions. I love watching shows that have an impact but are also a reflection of life through its storytelling. I’d like to talk about the series that are my top recommendations based on creativity, storytelling, and pure authenticity.
The Chi
The Chi is an incredible piece of creation with the perfect tone of blackness through the lens of black creators. I am not only a fan of this series but also a student of this show. Lena Waithe is a great professor of storytelling and showcasing the lifestyle of black Americans. Having the opportunity to see ”Starring Jacob Latimore” every episode is such an honoring feeling. He truly deserves the spotlight and has been working hard since day one. Luke James is another all-star who I consider to be an MVP every time he steps on the screen. The drastic change this show took is something I’ve enjoyed since “Trig” first arrived. I had a sneaky feeling that The Chi was about to get real in a way that made entertainment a brilliant sight to see. The storyline in season six gives me random chills when I have flashbacks of everything I’m watching. This “new” cast has proven to be a triple threat in acting, beauty, and sprightly energy.
Your Honor
“Your Honor” starring Bryan Cranston, Carmen Ejogo and Hunter Doohan has to be one of the most intense brilliant shows I have watch in a very long time. This show takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana which is being showcased in such “normal” way. Normally, storytelling loves depicting New Orleans in a distinctive way which can be a turn off sometimes. I really enjoyed people just being people. “A respected judge's son is involved in a hit-and-run that leads to a high-stakes game of lies, deceit and impossible choices.” is the log line and it doesn’t even tell you how gritty and complex this show really is. I highly recommend for those who enjoy intensity in a tv series.
Power Book 2: Ghost
This new season started off very strong and I am very excited to see how we come to an end. For those who don’t know, Power Book 2: Ghost is the second series from the Power Universe created by Courtney A. Kemp and has been running for four seasons and will be coming to an end this season. This show is such a powerhouse team of storytellers, actors and creators who put so much energy in making this universe unique and creative. I recommend this show because it has a beautiful way of humanizing those who choose different paths but also because this is the first show to represent those “thugs in college”. We don’t get them like we get it with power.
Sweet Tooth
Sweet Tooth is the show to watch right now. Another show on it’s last season is here but not to play. Since season one, the storytelling has been such a roller-coaster that I so happen to enjoy. Mind you, there are several “unbelievable” concepts to this story but I actually enjoy that. Everything doesn’t need to reflect reality yet everything needs to be showcased. Sweet Tooth makes me reflect on myself and how I function in reality. I love how this show actually showcases the lack of there is in the reality now. Please stream Sweet Tooth.
Boarders
When I first came across this show my first thought was “not another teen show” but this show really is good af. It’s something about this show that has me hooked. It touches on so many struggles living in this world as a certain color but it also creates space for individualism and that is something I can appreciate. “Boarders” has an authentic way of showcasing black students trying to maintain. I honestly rate this show a nine out of ten.
Please let me know if you have watched any of these shows. What is on your watchlist?
I was very surprised with how good boarders is!!
